On restraint

Restraint is a product decision, not a lack of ambition.

Studio notes

Restraint is often mistaken for timidity. It is the opposite. It takes confidence to leave features out, to refuse a dark pattern, to publish without a launch video.

Every CAOD surface asks the same question: what is the minimum honest version of this? Not the minimum viable demo. The minimum thing we are willing to sign our name to.

Restraint shows up in infrastructure too. Fewer moving parts. Fewer third parties. Fewer pages that exist only because a template had a blog slot.

When we add something public, we ask what we will maintain in a year. If the answer is unclear, the thing stays private until it is not.

Restraint is not permanent. It is a filter. Some ideas earn more surface area later. Most do not, and that is fine.

Readers feel restraint as calm. They may not name it. They simply do not leave exhausted.

We write this down so we remember during the weeks when enthusiasm is loud and the backlog is persuasive.
